Job Description

The Communications Coordinator as an essential member of VDOT Northern Virginia’s Communications team, provides support to district staff by coordinating and producing content for external and internal platforms including web, social media, television, and other digital media. Responsible for writing, recording, editing, and producing engaging, accurate, and timely content communicating information about VDOT issues, services, programs, initiatives, special events, and emergency information. Assists as needed with news media inquiries, special events, editorial planning, and other communications functions. The ideal candidate will be a skilled, independent, and motivated professional able to build relationships across organizational levels, with experience as a graphic designer, videographer/photographer, and/or multimedia web manager.

The selected candidate is expected to take photos, select or create illustrations, design and layout various single and multi-page full color publications, newsletters, infographics, social media shareables, web and video graphics or other projects for VDOT. Helps collaboratively carry-out projects to completion, and be comfortable with tight deadlines. Participates in discussions at various levels of the organization, including field and senior staff, project managers, consultants, and vendors in order to develop, execute, and implement projects. Identifies problems and solutions, communicates clearly and effectively, and builds and maintains effective working relationships with staff.

Suggests necessary modifications of text/content when appropriate and be familiar with AP style, as well as use agency style guides. Assists and coordinates with Central Office creative team to edit/archive film and photos, create/edit graphic design collateral, tape public meetings, and stream/upload videos. Maintains proficiency with current technology to continually improve quality of the products developed. .

Illustrative Examples of Work

Meets or corresponds with customers to identify requirements, specifications and implementation plan for developing new communications deliverables; works on video, audio, graphic projects within Adobe Creative Cloud; develops, writes, produces and edits multimedia content, communicating important information via VDOT’s internal and external websites, social media channels, and YouTube channel; Photographs and catalogs files that document field work, special events, and other VDOT projects; Designs desktop publishing materials (newsletters, flyers, brochures, and postcards) for internal and external audiences; creates web pages and sites, familiarity with HTML and CSS is helpful, must have working knowledge with Content Management Systems; uses Adobe Creative Cloud to produce high-quality videos, newsletter, graphics, illustrations, and other digital media products for Web and/or print use; and is responsible for providing and ensuring quality control for web and print deliverables with existing VDOT standards and protocols.

Minimum Qualifications

Proficiency in communications, graphic production or video/publications editing work, including experience with desktop graphics. Skill with digital cameras.

Knowledge of communications methods and theory as they relate to public relations and media relations.

Skill in the use of computers (Mac and PC) and software applications to include thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, especially InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

Experience designing graphics for application in social media, websites, and video is a must.

Ability to grasp abstract ideas, to develop themes, and have thorough knowledge of publications, printing and reproduction processes and illustration devices.

Demonstrated work experience in page layout, photo handling, file formatting and conversion, treatment of visual devices and choice of color, and size and volume of publications.

Strong organizational skills, and demonstrate the ability to meet deadlines, providing quick turnaround while maintaining significant attention to detail.

Able to work independently, and possess the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with staff.

Skill in writing for multiple audiences using multiple formats and tools. Experience in news writing and AP style.

Knowledge of Content Management Systems to maintain websites. Experience creating web pages and sites, familiarity with HTML and CSS programming languages.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, graphic design, journalism or equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Advanced computer experience to include experience with Adobe Creative Cloud strongly desired.

Special Requirements

It is expected that candidates will have a portfolio of work samples that they have produced.

Valid Driver’s License. Fingerprint based background check, references, work history, and DMV records check will be conducted.

All employees are required to work in emergency situations, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs.

PLEASE NOTE: This position is an hourly/wage position. Wage employees may not work more than 29 hours per work week on average over the course of a year and are limited to 1,500 hours within a 12 month period. No State benefits are provided.
